about

To celebrate the first decade of the festival in Spain, ROTOTOM RECORDS announces its debut release, ROTOTOM SUNSPLASH: LIVE FROM BENICÀSSIM. An album that collects 27 outstanding performances by some of the greatest acts to ever grace the Main Stage of the festival; 27 artists hailing from Jamaica, the UK, USA, Spain, Italy, France, New Zealand and elsewhere, emphasising the festival’s international composition.

Taking the form of a three LP edition, pressed in red, green, and gold vinyl and limited to 1500 numbered copies, and a double CD package, the album is drawn from the highlights of the main stage performances, recorded between 2012-2019; over two hours of duration nearly covering the entire decade since the festival moved to Benicàssim. Both editions come with a booklet with extensive bilingual liner notes written by noted journalist David Katz, author of People Funny Boy: The Genius of Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and Solid Foundation: An Oral History of Reggae (who also compiled the track listing), as well as exclusive live photographic portraits.

A journey that starts with the icons of roots reggae that have always formed a central presence on the main stage: Steel Pulse, Misty in Roots, Horace Andy, Max Romeo, Pablo Moses, Third World, Inner Circle, Marcia Griffiths, Luciano, Chronixx…, continues with some of the biggest names of the dancehall era, including Beres Hammond, Anthony B, Junior Kelly, Turbulence or Tanya Stephens, to then visit some ot the reggae revival most re-knowned artists, such as Kabaka Pyramid, Protoje, Romain Virgo, Jah 9 and Alborosie, and finalizes with big acts from the international sphere like Fat Freddy´s Drop, Groundation, Mellow Mood, Emeterians, Dub Inc, Macaco and Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals.

Through these 27 blasts of musical dynamism, Rototom Sunsplash: Live From Benicàssim is essential listening for all fans of reggae and its pervasive influence. Those who already know the festival will delight in the memories of these exemplary performances, and those who have not yet experienced it may listen and wonder at the audio dynamite presented here. Recorded on state-of-the-art audio equipment by a devoted team of music lovers and mixed with care by the gifted engineer Jim Fox at his Lion and Fox studios in Washington DC, Rototom Sunsplash: Live From Benicàssim captures the best of the festival’s last ten editions, rendering an awesome listening experience.
